Female sex drive, otherwise referred to as libido, is the whole expression of an individual’s desire for sexual activity. This may be impeded by various factors such as stress, hormonal imbalance, or prescription drugs. While there seems to be no single ingredient that can elevate a woman’s libido through the roof, there are herbs and foods that, through the years, have been considered for their ‘evocative’ properties. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on five foods/herbs traditionally believed to enhance the female sex drive.
1. Maca
Maca, also known as Peruvian ginseng, is a root vegetable native to the Andean highlands of Peru. It has been utilized as a traditional medicine for centuries to improve libido, fertility, and overall sexual health (Laszlo et al., 2016). Maca’s benefits have been attributed to its rich nutritional profile, which includes vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, making it a potent superfood (Laszlo et al., 2016).
Research has highlighted maca’s potential to regulate hormones and enhance sexual desire. In a study by Dording et al. (2008), 42 postmenopausal women received either a placebo or three different doses of maca over a 12-week period. The results revealed that maca consumption led to significant improvements in sexual function, measured by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Similarly, Brooks et al. (2008) reported that eight weeks of maca supplementation enhanced sexual desire in 50 postmenopausal women.
The mechanism behind maca’s effects on sexual function may involve increased blood flow. A study by Zenico et al. (2009) suggested that maca might improve erectile dysfunction in men by increasing nitric oxide production and promoting vascular dilation, thus improving sexual function and potentially boosting libido (Oakley, 2018).
Additionally, studies have investigated maca’s potential to alleviate sexual dysfunction induced by antidepressants. A systematic review by Sathyanarayana Rao et al. (2015) suggested that maca might help mitigate symptoms of sexual dysfunction in women who are taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
2. Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate is not only a well-known and beloved indulgence but also a possible source of libido-enhancing compounds. Dark chocolate is a rich source of phenylethylamine, a compound that stimulates the release of endorphins, the so-called ‘feel-good’ hormones (Isaak et al., 2020). This may contribute to the pleasurable sensations and feelings of well-being often associated with dark chocolate consumption.
Furthermore, dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which may positively affect cardiovascular health and improve blood flow (Reis et al., 2015). This may contribute to increased sensitivity in the genital area and ultimately enhance sexual pleasure.
Dark chocolate is also a source of magnesium, an essential mineral known for its potential role in stress reduction and anxiety alleviation (Murck et al., 2004). High levels of stress and anxiety have been shown to negatively impact sexual desire and satisfaction (Meston et al., 2008). Therefore, dark chocolate’s magnesium content may indirectly contribute to an enhanced libido by reducing stress and anxiety levels.
3. Ginseng
Ginseng has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to enhance sexual function. It is believed to increase nitric oxide production, which can improve blood flow to the genital area and increase arousal. Additionally, ginseng has adaptogenic properties, meaning it can help the body cope with stress, which can be a significant contributor to low libido. Studies have shown that ginseng can improve sexual function in women experiencing sexual dysfunction.
4. Avocado
Avocado is not only a nutritious and delicious fruit, but it is also a natural aphrodisiac. It contains high levels of vitamin E, which is essential for maintaining healthy hormone levels. Vitamin E has also been found to increase blood flow and sensitivity in the genital area. Avocado also contains healthy fats, which are necessary for the production of sex hormones. Additionally, the monounsaturated fats in avocados can help lower cholesterol levels, which can improve blood flow to the sexual organs.
5. Fenugreek
Fenugreek is a herb commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. It has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for low libido and sexual dysfunction in women. Fenugreek contains compounds that can increase the production of sex hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, which are essential for sexual desire. It also contains diosgenin, a compound that can help stimulate blood flow to the genital area and increase arousal.
Conclusion
These five foods and herbs can, added into one’s diet, help raise the female sex drive. However, one should remember that sex drive is affected by so many variables, so it can never be the case of one thing fitting all. One should address the problems at the root, whether it be stress or hormonal imbalance, and consult with a doctor before embarking on any major changes in diet. Furthermore, a healthy lifestyle, good sleep, and open communication with one’s partner are also some of the essential elements which may help raise libido. If women can combine the following things in proper proportions, they will then have enhanced libido and will have a fulfilling sexual relationship.
